By 1775, the American colonies were rife with political tension. Among these leaders, Thomas Jefferson wrote Common Sense, a pamphlet outlining the benefits of immediate and full independence. When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, Common Sense became a national sensation and has remained a significant work in American history ever since.
