English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has become a well-recognized and distinct branch of English Language Teaching. Since the late 1980s, it has evolved in two major ways. First, English for Business Purposes has grown to become one of the most prominent areas within ESP. Second, research in discourse and genre analysis, along with findings from computer-based linguistic studies, has deepened our understanding of how specialized spoken and written texts function.
