Slang is an expressive and informal type of language humorous, bold, vivid, and sometimes confrontational. In the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang, John Ayto and John Simpson present a dynamic collection of more than 6,000 slang words and expressions, sourced from the extensive Oxford English Dictionary database. The dictionary is arranged by topic, with sections covering areas such as the human body and its functions, society and people, animals, food and drink, money and work, and the passage of time.
Within each thematic section, entries are organized chronologically, beginning with the earliest recorded slang terms and continuing to modern usage, offering insight into how slang and everyday language have evolved over time. Each entry includes the word, its part of speech, and a definition, and many also provide examples of the term used in context. Additional labels often indicate the group or field from which the term originates such as military, nautical, or theatrical as well as its region of origin. When a term has changed in meaning over time, its different senses are presented in chronological order.
