While The Monster did not achieve the same acclaim as Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage upon its publication, it is now regarded by many critics as one of his most masterful works. The novella tells the story of Henry Johnson, an African-American servant who heroically risks his life to save his employer’s son, only to suffer terrible injuries that leave him permanently disfigured and socially shunned. This collection also includes several of Crane’s other noteworthy short stories.
